Train and Retain

Seasoned transportation and logistics professionals are retiring, so it is critical to provide transportation training programs for the next generation of leaders in the transportation workforce. The TLGC program provides advanced transportation training programs and opportunities for professional growth and career advancement to those who are in or moving into transportation leadership positions. Additionally, the TLGC will help retain transportation professionals who have industry experience by re-engaging them to meet new challenges in the transportation and logistics industry through continuing education and professional development.

Advanced Education

Transportation leaders who have a bachelor’s degree or even a master’s degree must continue their transportation education to move from technical to management to leadership roles in both the public and private transportation sectors and to fulfill professional development requirements. It is a priority to address transportation workforce needs of the 21st Century through continuing education, professional development, and transportation training programs. Current transportation leaders have identified areas for greater knowledge in the transportation industry:
    -Multi-modal transportation systems integration
    -Logistics and supply chain management
-Political processes in transportation decision making
    -Organizational and management principles
    -Transportation systems engineering principles
    -Operations research principles
    -Transportation finance
    -The role of technology application
    -Conflict resolution among competing interests
-Social, environmental, and economic considerations related to transportation and logistics

Meet an Instructor

Meet TLGC Instructor Dr. Jill Hough. Dr. Hough teaches Public Transportation, which offers students a unique opportunity for mentorship by an industry leader.

Dr. Jill Hough, TLGC instructor and the Program Director of the Small Urban & Rural Transit Center within the Upper Great Plains Transportation Institute, has matched up students from her Public Transportation course with industry mentors from across the country. Hough developed the program in 2011 in response to the call from industry professionals for better workforce development within higher education and continues it in 2012.

Mentors see the program as extremely valuable, offering students insight that comes from experience rather than a textbook. Additionally, the mentorship program opens a gateway for the industry to communicate with educators about the best practices for preparing students to become leaders in the industry.

“We need to have this dialogue so that classes are being crafted around real time transportation challenges,” said Robert Prince, Vice President of AECOM, who mentored a student in 2011.
David Lee, General Manager of Connecticut Transit and 2011 mentor, believes mentorship programs are critical to the development of students seeking careers in the industry. Many opportunities from partnerships between education and industry, he said, have not been fully realized.

Students also note the value of the mentorship opportunity, saying that the knowledge transit leaders provided gave insight into policies, management and other challenges leaders face. Hearing the perspective of professionals who have first-hand knowledge of the industry also helped students see what they are learning put into practice in real-life situations.
2011 Student Dilip Mistry, said that the mentorship program helps students see how partnerships between industry and education are beneficial, paving the way for the students to become mentors one day and sustaining such programs.

Educators and industry leaders alike know that creating a partnership between higher education and the transportation industry is vital to the continued success of the industry. While students can learn much from their mentors, Hough stresses that “that students can share innovative and creative ideas with the industry and help move the industry forward.”

The necessity of university-industry partnerships was addressed at the 2011 American Public Transportation Association’s Bus and Paratransit Conference. Hough moderated a panel of transit professionals as they discussed educating the transportation workforce. Additionally, the session included roundtable discussions led by the mentors and other professionals on topics in transportation education.

The Transportation Leadership Graduate Certificate (TLGC) program is an award-winning, online graduate certificate program that provides transportation and logistics graduate courses so you can enhance your knowledge and skills in the transportation industry. Sponsored by the Regional University Transportation Centers (RUTCs), the TLGC program can give you the training you need to perform better on the job and the expertise you need to advance within your organization.

Why should I enroll in the TLGC program if I’m already employed in the transportation industry?
Professional growth and professional development hours (PDH) are important for all transportation professionals. Continuing education is extremely valuable for people who are already in management positions or who want to move into management. For busy professionals, though, sometimes continuing education is difficult to fit into the schedule. All TLGC courses are offered online, so you can complete the courses on your own time and from your home, office, or even while you travel. Also, continuing education will improve both your technical and leadership skills, and demonstrate to your employer that you have a desire for career advancement and personal growth.

Is earning the TLGC worth my time and effort?
If you need to complete professional development hours each year, why not have something more to show for the time and effort you’ve invested? TLGC courses are offered through accredited universities and can be counted for PDHs, so you can simultaneously earn your professional development hours and this certificate. Participating in the TLGC program demonstrates both your technical and leadership abilities—the combination of these abilities is something employers look for in management.

Another benefit to the TLGC program is that the graduate credits you will earn can open the door to another advanced degree program in the future, as most universities will allow you to transfer up to 9 graduate credits into a program. Continuing your education is always valuable and could be just what you need to take your career to the next level.

Is the TLGC an option for workforce development?
The TLGC program is a great option for workforce development for your organization. Most workforce development programs are a blanket that managers hope will meet each employee’s needs, but every employee is unique. Since a variety of courses are offered each semester, students can choose courses that fit their interests and needs. The ability to tailor the certificate to individual needs makes the TLGC program a nationally recognized workforce development option. The Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) awarded the TLGC program the 2011 Innovation in Education Award for its ability to aid in the development and training of transportation professionals. The TLGC builds technical and leadership skills in its students, so we encourage you to consider incorporating TLGC into your workforce development plans!

The Transportation Leadership Graduate Certificate program can provide you the tools you need to continue your education or meet your professional development needs. Enhance your leadership and technical skills and watch your career take off!

This graduate course aims to introduce practical methods for the planning, design and evaluation of complex logistics and supply systems. This course introduces advanced modeling techniques and practical solution approaches, where cumbersome details of logistics systems are realistically simplified into models with only a few parameters and decision variables. It shows how the solutions to these approximated models are interpreted into optimal rules that guide the operation, design or planning process.
In many cases, we present a variety of solution techniques to certain problems and compare their performances. The course should help students develop: (i) an understanding of the practical methods for formulating and solving logistics problems, and (ii) the skills needed to plan, design and evaluate a complex logistics system. Some of these advanced mathematical optimization techniques are based on recent research findings. The course will emphasize supervised problem-solving and in-class discussion.

Question No. 27: Is the program for full-time or part-time students?

The program is an online certificate program that allows students to take courses on a full-time or part-time basis. Many students are also working professionals, so they only take one or two courses per semester. Since only 12 credits are required to earn the certificate, even part-time students can complete the certificate program relatively quickly.
